Manon - Massenet
Gran Teatre del Liceu, Barcelona
For their first-ever encounter in a staged opera, sparks fly as Natalie Dessay and Rolando Villazon deliver star performances at Barcelona’s Liceu’s spectacular stage production of Massenet’s Manon. The production comes to Barcelona via London's English National Opera under the stage direction of David McVicar, who imagines Manon’s world as corrupt and lascivious as embodied by the denizens of Hotel Transylvanie where everything and everybody is for sale. Natalie Dessay delivers a defining performance as Manon who thirsts for love but must struggle to rise above a life of thievery and degradation. Rolando Villazon is thrilling as her lover des Grieux and Manuel Lanza is the despicable Lescaut. Massenet’s most popular and enduring opera is based on Abbé Prévost's story of two lovers and has shone in the repertory since its 1884 creation in Paris. Victor Pablo Perez conducts the Orchestra Simfònica to perfection making the most of Massenet's brand of sensuality.
“Thrilling! I cannot imagine that we will see another Manon to equal this for a long time!” – Grammophone
“David McVicar's production of Manon is thrilling, sometimes even slightly shocking! It is unlikely that Natalie Dessay will ever give a greater performance than this. I cannot imagine that we will see another Manon to equal this for a long time: highly recommended.” - Gramophone Magazine
